One of few highlights of a disappointing opening session for Great Britain, Andrew Osagie will go into Sunday's World Indoor Championships 800m final confidently despite qualifying only as a fastest loser.
With only one certain to progress from each of the three heats, Osagie was just run out of the top position in Sopot by Poland's Adam Kszczot, but was comfortably one of the three fastest losers.
That came towards the end of a Friday morning session in which only three British athletes out of the nine on show qualified for their next stages.
Osagie is third on the world rankings this year with his 1:45.22 personal best and did not appear downhearted to be beaten by one of his chief rivals for a medal.
After running in the last last heat of three, he said: "I felt quite strong at the end. I knew with about 100m to go, if I finished quite strong I was going to be within the time.
"It's a Polish championships and the Polish athletes are going to step up. It's the same guys I'm racing every week though so I know what their strengths and weakness are."
The Olympic finalist, who won bronze in the World Indoor Championships two years ago, said: "I go into every championships thinking I can win a medal. There's no reason why I can't. Whether I do or not is a different matter. But I'll give it 100% when I step on that line."
He was happy to come through unscathed in a session which saw several athletes bumped on the tight indoor track. "At the World Indoors two years ago a few of the bigger names fell down in the semi-finals so you need to have your wits about you and race well and luckily today I had a clean run."
However, Ethiopia's world No.1 Mohammed Aman will go into the final as favourite and Osagie may have to be in shape to break the UK indoor record of 1:44.91 set by Seb Coe in 1983 to win.
